Many states have increased the usage of Magnesium and Calcium Chlorides as a road de-icier. These chemicals are found to be highly corrosive to brass and copper, which is the base material for the contact pins used in plugs. To keep your products in top condition and to slow the process of corrosion, Phillips recommends the following maintenance tips. Apply dielectric grease to every plug and socket. This will keep moisture out and increase the flow of energy through the connection. Swap plug ends every 6 months to even out plug pin degradation. It is recommended that the 7-way plug interface be cleaned and greased at every preventive maintenance interval. Phillips interval suggestion is 3 months or more often if the vehicle is excessively exposed to magnesium or calcium chloride. â¢ Use dielectric grease on every plug â¢ Change plug ends routinely to even out pin degradation â¢ Clean and grease 7-way plug and socket at every PM interval â¢ Wash electrical cables, plugs and sockets more frequently in winter but never with power wash TIPS Wash electrical cables, plugs and sockets more frequently in winter weather with water. Do not power wash as water can be forced into areas and cannot escape, leading to corrosion. Powder Coated gladhands are the next step up for anti-corrosion power, offering substantial corrosion protection. Although they offer great protection, over time the coating will chip away, leaving the area exposed to corrosion. Phillips recommends anodized gladhands to combat corrosion. This is the strongest form of protection for heavy corrosive environments. You can see why in the photoâs below. After 200 hours of testing in 5% Magnesium Chloride & 5% Salt (Road Deicers). Gladhands were severely scored before testing to simulate excessive wear. Note: An important place to watch for corrosion is the interior cavity of the gladhand. If corrosion buildup begins to chip away, it will enter the airline system. However, component replacement is not only for the winter months, it can apply all year round. Although not always necessary, itâs a good practice to replace air lines, and air line accessories, annually to ensure proper working order. However, during routine PMs, or during pre-trip inspections, if any of the following are noted, air lines should be replaced much sooner to avoid possible air line failures, leading to downtime, or CSA violations. â¢ Chaffing or damaged jacketing â¢ Rusted springs and/or fittings â¢ Nylon cables that are stretched out and no longer recoil â¢ Kinked nylon cables When selecting airlines for a tractor/trailer most know that it is recommended, and in some cases even required by law, to choose air lines with the following features: â¢ Air line assemblies that display the appropriate markings which signify compliance with DOT regulations (Required by law) â¢ Swivel fittings on the tractor end to avoid corkscrewing during installation â¢ Spring guards; to protect the hose or tubing from a sharp bend at or near the fitting (Required by law) â¢ Added handle grips at the trailer end to provide protection from kinking of air lines during gladhand connection and disconnection â¢ Coiled assemblies that extend to their maximum expected service length and return to their retracted position without sag â¢ Proper overall working length for the tractor-trailer application â¢ If operating in harsh environments, use cables rated for extreme temperatures [Lower than the typical standard of -40°F (-40°C)] When installing new air lines its always important to remember the following: â¢ If cables or handles are color coded, be sure to install/couple them with their correlating connections (red to red, blue to blue). â¢ Always remove the old fitting from the tractor protection valve and install the new fitting attached to the new air lines. Damaged Jacketing, Rusted Springs â¢ Air lines should be inspected regularly. It is suggested to replace them annually or upon discovery of damage to the air lines. â¢ If cables or handles are color coded, be sure to install/couple them with their correlating connections (red to red, blue to blue). â¢ Always remove the old fitting from the tractor protection valve and install the new fitting attached to the new air lines. However, as with all components subject to wear, there may come a time when rebuilding of the lock mechanism, or replacement of the entire top plate, will be required to restore the fifth wheel to its optimum performance condition. This bulletin is a checklist that will assist in making the choice between rebuilding or replacement of your fifth wheel. Inspection Preparation The fifth wheel top plate should be removed from the tractor and sufficiently cleaned before working through the checklist (Figure 1) . This will allow the inspector to fully evaluate the points in the check list. IMPORTANT: See your Ownerâs Manual for proper removal of your fifth wheel model. This checklist applies to all Holland XA-351, XA-311, XA-AL, XA-331, XA-231, XA-17, XA-S1, XA-S2, XA-201, XA-3501, and XA-2009 Series top plates â except where noted. If the inspector answers YES to any of the criteria, the top plate assembly is NOT a candidate for rebuilding, and should be replaced with an appropriate Holland replacement top plate. If you answer NO to all of the criteria, the lock mechanism and fifth wheel top plate are good candidates for rebuilding. Inspection Check List YES NO 1. Perform a thorough inspection of the entire fifth wheel casting. Were any cracks discovered? 2. Is there any evidence of weld repair on the casting? 3. Measure the flatness of the top surface of the fifth wheel casting using a straight edge that reaches across the top plate from one side to the other. Is the top plate surface warped by more than 1/8Ë (Figure 2) ? NOTE: The lock components should move freely into their unlocked position in the casting with a .040Ë minimum vertical clearance to the casting, both above and below the lock. 5. Check the tightness of the lock pin(s) to the fifth wheel. Can the lock pins rotate in the fifth wheel? Is there evidence of rotation exhibited in the holes in the casting? NOTE: This inspection only applies to XA-351, XA-311, XA-331, and XA-3501 top plates. 6. Inspect the top surface of the top plate for evidence of excessive wear. Is there any point on the top plate surface where the grease groove pattern has been worn away? 7. Inspect the inside pocket area of the casting where the bracket is mounted. Is there evidence of excessive wear to the grease groove in the pocket area? NOTE: This inspection only applies to XA-3501 and XA-2009 top plates. 8. Check the tightness of the bracket pins to the fifth wheel casting. Can the bracket pins rotate freely in the casting, and/or can the replacement pin be installed easily by hand? NOTE: This inspection only applies to XA-3501 and XA-2009 top plates. 9. Check the radius of the front lock of the casting using a radius gauge. Is the radius 1.5Ë or greater (Figure 4) ? NOTE: This inspection does not apply to XA-311, XA-3501, or XA-2009 top plates. If the inspector answers YES to any of the criteria, the top plate assembly is NOT a candidate for rebuilding, and should be replaced with an appropriate Holland replacement top plate. If you answer NO to all of the criteria, the lock mechanism and fifth wheel top plate are good candidates for rebuilding.
