Many states have increased the usage of Magnesium and Calcium Chlorides as a road de-icier. These chemicals are found to be highly corrosive to brass and copper, which is the base material for the contact pins used in plugs. To keep your products in top condition and to slow the process of corrosion, Phillips recommends the following maintenance tips. Apply dielectric grease to every plug and socket. This will keep moisture out and increase the flow of energy through the connection. Swap plug ends every 6 months to even out plug pin degradation. It is recommended that the 7-way plug interface be cleaned and greased at every preventive maintenance interval. Phillips interval suggestion is 3 months or more often if the vehicle is excessively exposed to magnesium or calcium chloride. • Use dielectric grease on every plug • Change plug ends routinely to even out pin degradation • Clean and grease 7-way plug and socket at every PM interval • Wash electrical cables, plugs and sockets more frequently in winter but never with power wash TIPS Wash electrical cables, plugs and sockets more frequently in winter weather with water. 18Horton Fan Inspection Tech Tip 1. Check for Air Leaks Apply air pressure to the fan drive. Confirm that the vehicle’s air system reservoir and air lines are clean and dry and without restrictions. Check solenoid valve for proper operation. a) Listen for air leaks around the solenoid valve, filter assembly, air lines and fittings. b) Look for air leaks. Using a spray bottle, spray soapy water around the spring housing, sheave and bleed hole. Look for bubbles. Maintenance Procedure: If an air leak is present, repair the fan drive with the appropriate Horton repair kit or replace the fan drive with a remanufactured Horton fan drive or new fan drive. Clean and repair vehicle air system as required. 2. Check the Fan Drive Friction Surfaces Check air pressure to the fan drive. A minimum of 90 psi [6.2 bar] is required to fully disengage the fan drive. a) Inspect the fan drive friction facing for wear by measuring the thickness of the friction facing material. A new friction facing is 11 / 32 inch [8.51 mm] thick. Replace the friction facing material if it has worn to ¼ inch [6.35 mm] thick or smaller. The fan mounting friction disc (FMFD) may need to be removed to check liner wear on the two-speed version. b) Check the FMFD surface for wear, discoloration or other signs of overheating. Maintenance Procedure: - If excess wear is present, check engine control module (ECM) and air-conditioning (AC) runtimes. The fan and AC runtime should be set at 60-90 seconds or greater to reduce friction wear and engagements. - Check ECM programming of engine brake. The engine brake should be set to “Fan Off” when the engine brake is applied. - Check for fan obstruction or shroud interference. 3. Check the Fan Drive for Proper Engagement and Disengagement Set the ignition switch to “On” for the following procedures. But DO NOT start the engine. a) Manually engage and disengage the fan drive by disconnecting the electrical connector at the solenoid valve, opening and closing the solenoid valve. b) Remove the air supply to engage the fan drive by following the instructions above. Attempt to move the fan. If the fan rotates with minimal force, the friction surfaces are worn beyond use. Repair with the appropriate Horton repair kit or remanufactured or new fan drive. c) Check the electrical wiring at the thermal switch, air-conditioning pressure switch and the solenoid valve. Make sure there are no loose wires or connections. Maintenance Procedure: - If excess friction wear is present, repair the fan drive with the appropriate Horton repair kit or remanufactured or new fan drive. - If over-cycling of an on/off fan drive is resulting in excessive friction wear, a Horton DM Advantage ® Two-Speed or PolarForce ® Two-Speed Conversion Kit should be considered to replace an on/off fan drive when making the repair. However, component replacement is not only for the winter months, it can apply all year round. Although not always necessary, it’s a good practice to replace air lines, and air line accessories, annually to ensure proper working order. However, during routine PMs, or during pre-trip inspections, if any of the following are noted, air lines should be replaced much sooner to avoid possible air line failures, leading to downtime, or CSA violations. • Chaffing or damaged jacketing • Rusted springs and/or fittings • Nylon cables that are stretched out and no longer recoil • Kinked nylon cables When selecting airlines for a tractor/trailer most know that it is recommended, and in some cases even required by law, to choose air lines with the following features: • Air line assemblies that display the appropriate markings which signify compliance with DOT regulations (Required by law) • Swivel fittings on the tractor end to avoid corkscrewing during installation • Spring guards; to protect the hose or tubing from a sharp bend at or near the fitting (Required by law) • Added handle grips at the trailer end to provide protection from kinking of air lines during gladhand connection and disconnection • Coiled assemblies that extend to their maximum expected service length and return to their retracted position without sag • Proper overall working length for the tractor-trailer application • If operating in harsh environments, use cables rated for extreme temperatures [Lower than the typical standard of -40°F (-40°C)] When installing new air lines its always important to remember the following: • If cables or handles are color coded, be sure to install/couple them with their correlating connections (red to red, blue to blue). • Always remove the old fitting from the tractor protection valve and install the new fitting attached to the new air lines. Damaged Jacketing, Rusted Springs • Air lines should be inspected regularly. It is suggested to replace them annually or upon discovery of damage to the air lines. • If cables or handles are color coded, be sure to install/couple them with their correlating connections (red to red, blue to blue). • Always remove the old fitting from the tractor protection valve and install the new fitting attached to the new air lines. With hub-piloted wheels, the weight of the wheel and tire rests on the top pilots creating a gap in the bottom pilots. Even the smallest gap results in an “egg-shaped” motion upon rotation. This uneven motion creates tire vibration and irregular tire wear. The bottom line is you can’t balance an egg. The TRU-BALANCE products bypass the hub pilots and center the wheel back to the wheel studs. This creates true center of the wheel and eliminates the uneven motion. The result is a smooth ride, increased tire life and increased fuel mileage. How to choose the right solution for you Regardless of which solution you choose, you should always use the TRU-BALANCE wire brush to thoroughly clean the holes and the threads to ensure the best centering results. All of the TRU-BALANCE products do the same thing: They center the wheels. The only difference is the application of the product. THESE PINS DO NO STAY ON THE WHEEL. The three pins are threaded on the studs in the 12, 4 & 8 o’clock positions. The wheel is then mounted over the pins. Use an impact wrench to tighten the lug nuts. Remove the pins and place the remaining lug nuts on the wheel and tighten with the impact wrench. Go over the wheel again and tighten to your wheel manufacturers specifications. There are various sizes of the tool available. See below for details. This is sleeve set that stays on the wheels at all times. It is for STEER WHEELS ONLY with a universal brake drum. Three sleeves are threaded on the studs at the 12, 4 & 8 o’clock positions of each wheel until seated against the hub. The brake drum is then installed followed by the wheel. The unique shoulder design of this sleeve centers both the wheel and the drum. There are many different sizes of Solution B to accommodate the various brake drums. See next page for details. Reduced Weight We applied advanced engineering tools to design a high strength, two-piece aluminum casting with lower internal pressure drops. Weighing in at eight pounds lighter than the Bendix ® AD-IS ® dryer, the standard AD-HF air dryer was designed to help you achieve your weight reduction goals. A two-piece housing is secured with both a retaining band and a sealed center-bolt. Our AD-HF dryer is also available with an integrated extended purge reservoir. Purge reservoirs are pressure rated in accordance with SAE J10 requirements. Improved Corrosion Resistance A corrosion resistant housing extends the service life of the dryer when subjected to harsh road surface treatments. The primary housing is also treated with an additional layer of corrosion protection. The robust housing and reservoir also enable highquality remanufacturing by Bendix. If air leakage between the head and block is noted, repair or replace compressor. Air pressure trapped between the governor and compressor unloaders (See Common Test 5) Air system leakage (See Common Test 1) Complaint: Can Not Build System Pressure Above “X” psi. “Blow leakage” at the compressor unloaders • • Remove all hardware from the compressor inlet, then remove the governor. With 120 psi of shop air applied to the compressor unloader port, listen for air leakage at the inlet. If noted, repair the leak or replace the compressor. Caution! To prevent system damage, the ignition switch must be turned off manually if the system pressure reaches 130 psi. Incorrect setting on governor • • Verify the safety valve operation. Drain air from the system, remove or disconnect the governor from the compressor and install a gauge in the governor unloader (UNL) port. Build system pressure and note when the pressure on the dash gauge and the test gauge are equal. They should be equal at the maximum setting of the governor. Discharge line leakage (See Common Test 2) Note: The Bendix ® AD-IS ® air dryer must have pressure supplied from the compressor greater than its pressure protection setting to deliver air pressure to the system. Air system leakage (See Common Test 1) Compressor head gasket failure • • Apply a soap solution around the cylinder head. If air leakage between the head and the block is noted, repair or replace the compressor. • • “Blow leakage” at the air dryer exhaust during charge cycle (See Common Test 6) (See Common Tests on back page) Made with FlippingBook RkJQdWJsaXNoZXIy MTEyNjY3NA== 02Bendix Charging Treatment and Storage Systems Troubleshoot Complaint: Air Dryer Cycles “ON & OFF” Constantly This complaint is caused by leakage - either service system or supply system. Service system leakage is shown on dash gauges. Supply (wet tank) system leakage is not. Note: System purge air dryers may purge more often than those with an integral purge volume. Air system leakage (See Common Test 1) Supply system component leakage Drain the system, install a gauge and a shop air hose in place of the drain cock in the supply reservoir. Fill the system to 120 psi, shut off the shop air and check for leakage on the following components in the order presented. Compressor unloader • • Drain the system, remove the governor from the compressor, plug the governor UNL port and re-test. If the leakage is OK, repair compressor unloader mechanism or replace compressor. If the leakage is NOT OK, then continue. (See Common Test 4) Holset ECON valve (used with Holset Type “E & QE” compressors) • • Check for missing, malfunctioning or leaking ECON valve. If a Bendix DI (Drop-In) with a soft seat purge valve air dryer is installed, the ECON valve is not required. • • Is ECON valve required, but missing? If YES, install it and a special Holset check valve with choke. If NO, and ECON valve is present, replace the ECON valve and special check valve. If NO, and an ECON valve is not required, then continue. Air dryer • • Check for leakage. • • Remove the line from the air dryer inlet and - with 120 psi in the supply reservoir - soap the exhaust and inlet port of the air dryer. If the leakage is greater than one (1) inch bubble in one (1) second at the exhaust port, repair or replace the check valve (on dryers with integral purge volume) or replace the body assembly on system purge air dryers. If the compressor is a Holset type E or QE, verify the air dryer in use contains a soft seat purge valve. If the leakage is greater than one (1) inch bubble in one (1) second at the inlet port, repair or replace the purge valve assembly (on dryers with integral purge volume) or replace the turbo cut-off valve on system purge air dryers. Complaint: System Pressure Goes to 150+ psi • • Drain the air system to 0 psi; remove and disconnect the governor from the compressor. Start the engine and note the air pressure rise on dash gauges. Apply 120 psi shop air to compressor unloader port. If air pressure continues to rise, repair the compressor unloaders or replace the compressor. If the air pressure ceases to rise, repair or replace the governor. Complaint: Low Pressure Warning After Only 1 or 2 Brake Applications Brakes out of adjustment • • Adjust the brakes. • • Ensure proper operation of the tractor protection valve. Excessive system leakage on service (application) side of system • • Build the system pressure to governor cut-out and shut off the engine. With the park brakes released, make a full service application and note the dash gauges for two (2) minutes. The pressure drop on either gauge should not exceed 4 psi. (2 psi per min.) If the pressure drop is excessive, find the leakage in the service system. If it’s OK, then continue. Incorrect low pressure switch in use or setting incorrect • • Build the system pressure to governor cut-out. With the engine OFF and ignition ON, slowly drain the air pressure from one service reservoir.
